In 1991, following the break-up of the USSR, the former Communist regime was replaced in most of the newly independent states by political and economic systems based on democracy and a liberal market economy. Have these dramatic changes been accompanied by radically new demographic trends? Have diverging demographic trends appeared among different populations in the new states? The main purpose of this Scientific Panel is to examine these questions in relation to mortality.
